Fall 2014 Season – Week 6 Report: Brooklyn Men and Women Drop Tough Games in Week 6

In week 6 of 2014 season following an off week for both teams, the Brooklyn Rugby Club men and women returned to action this weekend. The men fell to New York Rugby Club, 30-24, in a heartbreaking loss, while the women fell, 36-0, to Burlington Rugby Football Club (VT).

The Brooklyn men faced off against inner-city rival New York Rugby Club on Saturday at Randall’s Island. New York jumped out to an early lead after converting two penalty conversions to go up 6-0. Brooklyn then responded with a try in the corner by winger Jake Wyse. Genarro Anzalone would miss the conversion attempt, making the score 6-5 midway through the first half. New York added another penalty conversion shortly thereafter to extend their lead to 9-5, but the remainder of the first half would be played in New York’s end with Brooklyn scoring three consecutive tries. The first came on a bruising run by lock Errol Jones, who would add another later in the half. Gedas Monginas also added a try, and Anzalone was successful on two of his final three conversion attempts, finishing two from four on the day. Brooklyn went into halftime leading 24-9.

The second proved to be a different story, as New York scored two tries with successful conversions to come within one point, 24-23, late in the second half. Then after a series of penalties, New York took the lead with a late try and successfully converted on the kick to go up 30-24 with just minutes remaining in the game. After one final surge from Brooklyn, the final whistle blew and Brooklyn found themselves on the losing end of a hard-fought 30-24 contest.

New York Rugby Club: 30 – Brooklyn: 24
Tries: Jake Wyse, Errol Jones (2), Gedas Monginas
Conversions: Gennaro Anzalone (2)

The Brooklyn women’s team traveled to Vermont to play Burlington Rugby Football Club. In a hard fought loss against a quality opponent, Brooklyn would find themselves in their own end of the field throughout much of the match.

Despite a number of great plays in both the first and second half, Brooklyn was unable to get on the scoreboard against a staunch Burlington defense. Brooklyn wing Morgan Kee, contributed several great open field tackles, while flanker Heather Parton added some excellent steals and tackling in the pack throughout the game.

Brooklyn did begin to break through the Burlington defense more consistently towards the end of the game, but Burlington’s defense was able to maintain a clean sheet on the day. The final whistle blew with Burlington winning, 36-0.

Burlington: 36 – Brooklyn: 0
